How to read more books

Ok, so you want to read more but don’t have much time? I get it.

Or perhaps you love books but spend too much money constantly buying them? Yep, I’ve been there too.

The great news is that books don’t have to be expensive—in fact, you can read for free!

1. Join a library: this has got to be one of the best ways to read. Library memberships are usually local and free! What better way to enjoy your local area than a trip to your library for time browsing the aisles and smelling the scent of books everywhere!

2. Buy books from op shops: they are full of great finds! You can find books for as little as a couple of dollars! Just be sure to exercise some self-control as the bargain monster can often appear in these settings, and next thing you know, you’ve brought home 50 new books. But you do you.

3. Book swap among friends or family: looking to read that latest biography that your library doesn’t stock and no one has thrown out yet, but don’t want to spend a fortune on it? Ask around friends or family and start book swaps. You borrow one; they borrow one. You can even return your borrowed books to each other at the same time, minus the email from the library!

4. Start small: if you want to increase your daily book reading quota, start with small goals—read two pages a day. By starting small, you’ll likely be able to sustain that goal for a week and slowly increment rather than setting a chapter a day and stopping after a few nights. You’ll feel more encouraged that you kept your goal and likely will be more motivated to continue and increase—you’ll end up reading more by reading less!

5. Read books you like: this might seem obvious, but it’s easier to keep reading a book we enjoy rather than one we don’t. Find genres that make you feel curious or inspired. Read book reviews or look for recommendations online. Ask friends or family what they’re reading. Explore beyond what you know, as you might find something you love!
